  • Kunwar Viyogi Sahitya Kala Samman – 2020

    Sahitya Akademi awardee Ved Rahi was honored with the prestigious Kunwar Viyogi Sahitya Kala Samman – 2020 by Dogri Sanstha Jammu & Kunwar Viyogi Memorial Trust on 21 September 2020.

    Dr K Sreenivasrao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi who was the Guest of Honour at the event, conferred the award to Rahi – a prominent Dogri, Hindi and Urdu writer. This Samman was instituted in 2019. Late Chhatrapal, another towering personality in Dogri literature was the first to be awarded this Samman.

    Ved Rahi, in his acceptance speech fondly narrated his close association with Kunwar Viyogi, the writer in whose memory the Samman has been instituted. He appreciated the work that the Trust and Dogri Sanstha Jammu are doing to promote language and literature.

    Earlier, in his welcome address, Prof Lalit Magotra, President of Dogri Sanstha, spoke of the pioneering works done by Rahi and his outstanding contribution to Dogri literature. He also briefly described the activities of Dogri Sanstha, Jammu and the Kunwar Viyogi Memorial Trust.

    About Ved Rahi Ji

    Ved Rahi is a very prominent Dogri, Hindi and Urdu author and an accomplished Hindi film director, producer and scriptwriter from Jammu.

    Conferred with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his Dogri novel, Aale in 1983, Ved Rahi has to his credit 7 published novels, 3 collections of short stories and 2 anthologies of poetry in Dogri language. He has also published several novels, short story collections and anthologies of poetry in Hindi and Urdu. His novel, Lal Ded is a re-creation of the Life of Lal Ded as seen through the author’s eyes. It is available in Dogri and has been translated to Hindi and other Indian and International Languages also.

    Born in Jammu on May 22, 1933, Ved Rahi has also made a significant mark in the Hindi Film industry. He has written stories, film-scripts, dialogues for 25 Hindi feature films and directed 5 films.

    He has also scripted and directed numerous documentaries, tele-serials and short films. Gul Gulshan Gulfam is one of his most popular TV Serial. He also made the film Veer Savarkar (2001), a bio-epic on the life of Indian revolutionary Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

    The Indian film director and novelist was conferred with the ‘Maharashtra Gaurav’ award in 1990. In 2011, the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan honoured him with the prestigious Maha Pandit Rahul Sankritayayan award, while in 2012, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir bestowed him with Lifetime Achievement Award. Life and works of Ved Rahi have also been captured in a documentary shot by the Sahitya Akademi.
